Part 3: BP and Kevin Costner?

British Petroleum Part 3 of 3
By Jason L.G.

In an unlikely scenario, a Hollywood actor is putting his money where his mouth is. Rather, Keven Costner has been putting his money where his mouth is since the early 1990's after he and his brother decided to start investing in researching ways to cleanup oil spills. It was shortly after the Exxon Valdez incident in Alaska, and so, it set Costner and his brother on a mission. Twenty years later, it seems another tragedy is opportunity.

British Petroleum has agreed to purchase some of Costner's machines that use centrifugal force to separate oil from water inside a canister. Each machine can process up to 200 gallons per minute. Due to the massive amount of oil already in the ocean, which is continuing to spill in the ocean, these machines may slow the mess at best. I commend Kevin Costner for stepping up, investing, testifying before Congress, and saying the Coast Guard blocked him from heading out to the spill-site to start putting the machines to work.(1)(2)

At least someone is taking action, although he has been stopped by the Coast Guard. However, there are more questions to be asked here. Why isn't BP stopping this leak now? Why do they believe it is worth polluting the ocean for months and months on end, to salvage this offshore oil-well? Why are they willing to go so far?

Why is the Coast Guard blocking cleanup efforts? Why can't companies willing to go cleanup get out there? What is hindering this?

Why was the well platform altered from it's original blueprint? Why is there no record of these changes?

Lastly, if BP does follow through and purchase these machines, will they actually deploy them?
